The Duval County School Board votes to throw away 710 thousand dollars

Last week the Duval County School Board voted 5-2 (Burney and Wright voted against) to bring 296 Teach for America recruits to Jacksonville over the next 3 years. The district will pay a twenty-four hundred dollar finder fee for each recruit. That is 710 thousand dollars over the course of three years.

Friends I know teachers here and recent grads from local colleges of educations that can’t find jobs. Why would the school board choose to hire people whose only background is a five week access course and the thought, hey that could be cool, instead?

What’s worse though friends is we just let go 14 teachers because the district said they couldn’t afford them.

This no matter how you look at it was a bad call.
