School Board member Betty Burney says her salary is none of the public’s business

Her exact quote according to the Times Union was; “I had people camped out at my car today,” she said. Those were reporters asking if she was going to reject the raise, she said.

“We have a right to do with what we want to do with our money,” Burney said.

Burney noted that board members didn’t complain when their salaries were reduced in 2009.

Mrs. Burney is both right and wrong, when the money is paid to her for her services she can choose what to do with it however at the same time the public has a right to know how much it is paying her for those services.

For the record I would have taken the modest bump in pay, times are tough and if the job is done correctly the school board position should be a full time one. Mrs. Burney could have answered yes or no on whether she was going to take the raise or not but instead chose to blame the public for wanting to know.

Ironically what was lost in all this was 14 teachers were fired yesterday.
