Teach for America week comes to an end. Did you even notice it was going on?

Teach for America takes non college of education majors off supposedly elite college campuses, gives them five weeks of training and places them in inner city classes where they are supposed to serve two year commitments. They are the darlings of corporate reform and Duval County has jumped on the bandwagon bringing in hundreds a year and they don’t mind paying the 2400-dollar finders fee either.

You probably didn’t notice Teach for America week because the TFA teachers usually don’t make much of an impact or stick around. Don’t get me wrong there are brilliant TFA alumni that dedicated themselves to teaching and do a great job but they are few and far between.

I believe TFA has a roll to play in education but it is not at the front of the line where Duval County has put them especially when we have local teachers and college of Ed grads that can’t find jobs.
