Should kids in elementary school be using calculators

From the Tampa Bay Times, by Jeff Solochek

Old-fashioned math: Texas considers calculator ban in elementary schools
Saying too many young kids can't perform basic math skills, the Texas Board of Education has taken steps to remove calculators from the equation in elementary schools.

"We hear more and more from parents that their kids in school are being allowed to rely on calculators without actually memorizing their math facts and building that firm foundation," board Chairwoman Barbara Cargill, R-The Woodlands, told the Houston Chronicle.

The Texas board is expected to make a final vote on this issue Friday, as it considers new and tougher math standards. Anyone think Florida should take a cue?
