Teachers get one year contracts, charter schools ten. What’s wrong with this picture?

Due to senate bill 736 all new teachers are on one year contracts where they can basically be let go for any reason. Even veteran teachers can be let go as seniority no longer counts for much. Past performance doesn’t matter either.

Charter schools on the other hand if they have done well can be renewed for five or ten years and where past performance plays a role in that, future performance does not.

We treat our teachers with such distain and charter schools like the bells of the ball despite overwhelming evidence that here in Florida Charter schools perform worse than public schools. Last year 17 of the 32 F schools in Florida were charter schools including the local KIPP School which was the worst performing school in Northeast Florida.

Their punishment? The school board voted to allow them to expand.

What is wrong with this picture.
