The Times-Union is contributing to the "miseducation" of the public

By Educatedone, a poster on the Times Union's web-site. The editorial they posted on was about how the school district is heading in the right direction. -Rob

I want to know who writes these editorials because it paints the picture with one big fairytale. And this has to stop.

The Times-Union is contributing to the "miseducation" of the public about what is happening in public education today. And this has to stop.

If we are to seek valid change and truly take our schools to the next level, we are going to have to have an open and honest dialogue that is going to inspire people to get up and move for the sake of our children's future.

As a DCPS veteran educator and principal, there is a large white elephant standing in the room. I hate to seem as if I am "downing" our kids but the graduation rates are massively inflated. If you visit the district's website, they know 71% of our students are not really graduating, indicative by the need to indicate a new standard of assessing graduation rates. This is a result of the Florida Association of School Superintendents effectively lobbying folk at DOE to make "them" look better than they really are performing.

And how is Duval graduating students more prepared for college when our own district staff has reported we nearly lead the state in the number of students who have to take college remedial courses? Even FSCJ President Wallace informed the entire community 70% of Duval grads matriculating there are in need of remedial courses.

There are huge problems with education in this city. However, organizations like TPC, JPEF, TFA, etc. have no business hosting or creating "change workshops" for our schools. All of these groups with their own (political) agendas are what have driven our schools down drastically. The state isn't all the blame.

Times-Union, you should be ashamed of yourselves for printing false information to appease the Board who probably has offered you something in return.

This city and its good ole boy network sickens me to my stomach.

Poor children.
