The Times Union thinks if they tell the big lie long enough people will believe it

The Times Union is enamored with graduation rates and increased standards so much to the point they have disconnected from reality because the reality is not nearly as pretty as they would have the public believe.

Reality: the graduation rate has gone up by about six percent (most of that in the last two years) since the district went to higher standards six years ago. This is undoubtedly greatly influenced by social promotions and the districts judicious use of grade recovery.

As for the increased standards and college readiness well those kids must not be going to Florida State College at Jacksonville who last year reported that seventy percent of Duval grads had to take remedial classes.

The Times Union does the city a diservice when it puts a positive spin on the serious problems our schools are facing.
