The state’s top court is to hear arguments this moring about whether it was constitutional for the Florida Legislature to order thousands of public employees — including teachers – to contribute 3 percent of their pay toward their pensions.
A lower court tossed the requirement, ruling it violated collective bargaining rights of employees.
The lawsuit was brought by the Florida Education Association. State leaders were angered by the circuit court ruling and appealed.
Today, the Supreme Court is to hear that appeal, the Palm Beach Post reports, in a case that could have a deep impact on the state budget. Lawmakers used the money employees had to pay to free up state funds that were then used to deal with deep funding shortfalls.
The hearing was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
