The Times Unions editorial about the cheating scandal in Atlanta was only partly correct. The part the editor got wrong is that foreign countries are passing education in the United States because so many of our kids live in poverty and so many other countries are investing in education. High stakes testing by the way doesn’t exist in many of the countries zooming by us.
The part it got right is it is a shame. It’s a shame so many of our kids live in poverty and we shove them all into a one size fits all curriculum without regard to their desires and aptitude. We don’t have the kids’ society wishes we did to take these tests, we have the kids we do and we should start planning accordingly before Atlanta becomes the tip of the iceberg.
