Explaining Florida's accountability system

By John Meeks

This perfectly illustrates what it is like to teach in Florida's public schools. In the 16+ years of education reform in our state, there has been little to no consistency in how we hold our public schools accountable. What has been constant is the ongoing moving of the goal posts and changing of the ground rules. I fear that it is impossible to make an apples-to-apples comparison of our yearly progress because the elected and state officials of our state are more interested in playing politics and settling scores than on helping move our public schools forward. Teachers, education support professionals, parents, and all community stakeholders need to speak up today. It's time to stop running our schools by the seat of our pants and it's time to draft public education policy that actually serves our students!
