The war on education

From the Examiner.com

by Albert Pupo

State Budgets are in trouble, then you have the National Debt looming like a specter threating to take the nation into bankruptcy. There seems to be a clarion call for fiscal responsibility coming from the Conservative corners. This obsession to cut the budget is played out at a micro level in various states and cities across the nation. In response fiscal hawks, like Walker, Scott, Mcconell and Boehner are urging for services to be cuts and budgets to be balanced. The irony and simple hypocrisy found with all of this is that of course naturally this only applies to the poor and middle class, once again the ultra wealthy and Corporations get away with actually receiving tax cuts. The song apparently remains the same it is a House track on an endless loop which seems to be ongoing. The simple fact of the matter is that the Corporations continue to win.

Rick Scott Florida's head Ceo has planned cuts for many things ranging from transportation, to social services, education, etc. However amongst those cuts he includes property taxes and corporate taxes. In a state where there is no income tax and the corporate tax is already at 5% Scott wants to continue to fund those who funded his campaign.

[1]According to Rick Scott "If I phase out the business tax, there will be no reason that somebody will want to open up their business in another state.”

This statement is indicative of Scott's approach towards economic growth. There many people who would agree that this is a good thing that corporations are producers and need assistance and welfare. However the tax cuts can only be done by trading off something, there is no such thing as a “free lunch “ economically speaking.

To compensate for this Governor Scott decides to basically take the chainsaw to an easy target, that being education. The solution for social services is to fill that void and fill with privatized corporations, who will basically provide inferior quality service and are not obligated in making sure things are run efficiently, as they are based on a profit model.

Meanwhile in Wisconsin we get Scott Walker, the infamous governor who recently passed the “attack on collective bargaining bill.” Walker's strategy while on the surface different is simply more of the same. Walker has also targeted education.[2] The education cuts alone could reach some $900 million dollars or so.Like in Florida Walker is going after a target that would ultimately serve the fascist agenda. Meanwhile earlier this year Walker passed a bill that will give about a million dollars in tax breaks to corporations that move to Wisconsin effective for a two year period. So while Unions and education are asked to give up money, Walker is rewarding his Corporate paymasters with tax breaks, this blatantly shows the sort of agenda that Walker is expected to carry forward.

Education is basically the target from these two governors. In a state like Florida in cities like Orlando, Tampa , Miami, etc the cuts will be devastating. Even in a place like Wisconsin where education has thrived, more the cuts will do much damage to its public school system. Education has always been a target because it is the ultimate equalizer, it is what allows anyone to become whatever they desire to be. This is the way to achieve the American Dream, to attack it is pure strategy, as an uneducated work force creates a work force that can be used for cheap labor. Basically the ultimate Agenda is to create a pool of cheap labor that will ultimately fund the corporate paymasters, hence all the deep cuts to education.
