It would be nice if Ashley Smith Juarez candidate district 3 thought teachers were professionals.

I can’t imagine one teacher in the city let alone any in district 3 voting for Mrs. Smith-Juarez. In case you didn’t know it Mrs. Smith-Juarez through the Chartrand foundation was instrumental in bringing Teach for America to Jacksonville.

Teach for America takes non-education major recent graduates, puts them through s five week access course and then places them in our most challenged schools or the exact opposite of what we know to be best practices. It is worse however as these recruits only serve a two year commitment making sure our most needy schools have a constant revolving door of teachers.

Hillsborough County turned down Teach for America because it said it wants professionals in the classroom who might spend a lifetime there. They are doing a lot better than we are by the way.

TFA says neither teacher education nor experience matters. It reduces teachers from professionals to easily replaceable service workers.

This is the type of idea and leadership Mrs. Smith-Juarez brings to the table and it is not the kind the city’s children can afford.
