Senate bill 736 will be voted on Friday, commonly known as the teacher
merit pay bill. What it does is make future teachers at will employees
that can be fired for any reason, disregards advanced degrees and
creates millions of dollars in unfunded mandates as tests will half to
be created and scored. The worse thing however is there is no study
that indicates merit pay works. Education isn't as simple as reward
good teachers, fire bad ones but the Florida legislature and Jacksonville's
own Steven Wise would have you believe that. I get we want school
reform but I think the reforms should be based on things that are
proven to work, not based on hyperbole childish assumptions and punishing teachers and their unions.
