Gov. Rick Scott Tuesday is hosting a receptions for backer of a program run by powerful pro-school choice group Step Up for Students.
The Tampa-based group knows its way around Tallahassee.
In August, we wrote that the group wrote a legislation, handed it off and explained it to sponsor Rep. Mike Horner, R - Kissimmee, and told him how to tweak it. The bill put in protections for the Tax Credit Scholarship, which is only administered by Step Up For Students. It allows companies to divert their corporate income tax into a scholarship program that allows low income schools to select which school they attend.
In 2010, the group helped pen legislation that upped the program's cap from $118 million to $140 million, and allowed that cap to increase by 25 percent after any year the number of tax credits handed out reaches 90 percent of the total cap.
Tuesday's reception is at the governor's mansion, and is "to recognize those who have contributed to the Step Up For Students scholarship program," according to a release.
