From Phenom
Pay data are coming out, and it’s worth asking: how many Massachusetts K-12 teachers does it take to equal the pay of one average CEO (of an S & P 500 company)?
The answer: 167 teachers are the equal of one average CEO. Not an especially highly paid CEO. Just a plain regular CEO. (Teachers in Massachusetts are paid on average $68,000 a year, according to the MTA budget; CEOs on average are paid $11,358,445, according to www.PayWatch.org.
Teachers are being asked to take pay cuts, brought in by making them pay lots more for health insurance. In higher education, faculty took a pay cut last year, as the 1.2 percent nominal increase in pay was less than the rate of inflation.
But cheer up: SOMEONE is getting a pay raise. CEO pay went up 23 percent.
I don’t need to tell you: We’d love to improve education and do better by the students. Unfortunately, “there’s just no money.”
