Rick Scott, Jeb Bush and all of their corporate friends have launched a new concerted effort to systematically destroy public schools in the state of Florida. Public education is a public trust and provides the very foundation of democratic society and civic culture. It is widely believed that the Legislature will seek to greatly increase the scope and type of voucher programs in 2011 bringing the state closer to “vouchers on demand.” Education is not a business, children are not products. Teachers, students, parents and activists have joined together on social media sites to form a grassroots movement to defend public education in the state of Florida. These concerned citizens are calling for friends of public education to wear red on Governor-Elect Rick Scott’s Inauguration Day, Tuesday January 4. They chose red to signify their outrage towards the proposed measures that Florida’s government will be trying to implement. The Florida AFL-CIO, in support of FEA and public education, calls on all Labor activists to show solidarity for PUBLIC SCHOOLS on Tuesday and wear red.
