More math and science for Florida's kids

This is a terrible idea for several reasosn, first Duval throws kids in electives they didn't pick all the time and I don't see how you can force kids to like things they don't. Finally if they aren't paying for all their other mandates, including merit pay and the class size amendment, where are they going to find the money for this? -cpg

It's abundantly clear now that the experts want Florida students to focus more heavily on science, math and engineering courses as a path to international competition and meaningful careers.

Incoming state Senate president Don Gaetz has filed a bill to encourage Florida's high schools to get more teens on that path.

His legislation would award bonus points in the state's high school grading formula based on the percentage of the school’s students who earn credits in mathematics and science in excess of the graduation requirements. The courses must be more demanding than the base requirements.

Nicknamed the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) High School Graduation Acceleration Act of 2012, the bill also aims to revive the state's largely ignored early graduation track. It would award high schools bonus points in the grading system for the percentage of students who graduate in fewer than 8 semesters, requiring districts to establish policies for early graduation.

Anything to save on FTE expenses, right?
