Typically the school board has been made up by insiders waiting their turn or people with limited experience who think, I can fix our schools, and as a result the district has really struggled. What the board needs is teachers; people who has been in the classroom and know what does and what does not work. I am a teacher and have been one for eleven years. I have worked at Palm Avenue, Paxon Middle and Ed White High School. I bring with me solutions that are the results of tens of thousands of conversations with other teachers and we all agree the way we have been forced to do things is bad for both teachers and students. What we need is disciplined schools and rigorous classes. We also can’t continue to ignore teachers if we hope to be successful. Furthermore, I believe we need more trades and skills taught in our schools because not every student is going to go to college and we must prepare them to be productive citizens too. Finally for years now, I have written about the districts issues in the Folio, Victims Advocate and Times Union and I also manage a blog, Education Matters, which tackles the problems our public schools have.
