Duval County puts perfume on a pig

First let me say I don’t blame our students many of whom have been pushed through without a work ethic or discipline and are placed in classes they don’t like or are irrelevant. I don’t blame the teachers who are put in positions that are unattainable and often have their jobs threatened if they don’t play along. No I blame the superintendent and school board for creating a culture where what is best for kids and teachers doesn't matter.

When I read that Duval County was 11 points blow the state average (we’re below average in everything by the way) 59-48, with kids passing the states algebra EOC, I thought there was no way they can spin this positively. Boy was I wrong.

This is from their press release:

Jacksonville, FL – Duval County Public Schools received its Algebra I End-of-Course (EOC) assessment scores from the Florida Department of Education today. According to the results, 48% of Duval County Public Schools’ Algebra I students are deemed proficient in Algebra I, a 4% growth from last year. Duval County’s ninth- and 10th-grades outpaced the state in growth, while 10th-grade also outpaced the state in performance.

Wow! After reading that it sounds like we’re doing pretty well, but we’re not.

How can people have an honest conversation about improving education when the district is constantly putting out fluff like above?

The press release should have said, we have pockets of greatness and a lot of good things going on in our district but overall we’re floundering and we need the city to step up to help us right our ship. Please help us right our ship.

We’re in trouble friends but sadly by reading the county’s press release you might not be able to tell.
