Florida sued over ban of doctors asking about guns
The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence is suing Gov. Rick Scott, Secretary of State Kurt Browning and other Florida officials in an attempt to lift the ban on doctors asking patients about gun ownership.
The suit, filed today in a Miami federal court, claims the law violates First Amendment rights for doctors. Three doctors and three physicians groups were listed as the plaintiffs: Drs. Bernd Wollschlaeger, Judith Schaechter and Tommy Schechtman; the American Academy of Pediatrics, Florida Chapter; American Academy of Family Physicians, Florida Chapter; American College of Physicians, Florida Chapter.
Lawmakers who pushed for the law said it will protect patients' Second Amendment right to bear arms.
