As we noted over the weekend, winter vacation is fast approaching.

Gradebook readers took the opportunity to jump all over the way that districts handle the break. Some questioned why students need a two week hiatus so soon after taking a week for Thanksgiving. Others noted that putting the time off in late December creates academic issues for high school students at semester's end.

State Sen. Stephen Wise, chairman of the Senate Education Pre-K-12 Committee, has filed a bill to deal with winter break. But if you're expecting any legislation to tackle matters such as semester length, timing of semester exams or the like, look elsewhere.

Wise simply wants to make sure school districts give Christmas its due.

The bill, in its entirety, states: "Each school district shall refer to the period during which school is not in session and which includes Christmas Day as Christmas Break rather than Winter Break."

Happy holidays? The session begins Jan. 10.
