Years ago Chris wrote: Tying principal’s evaluations to suspensions and referrals is courting disaster. When people’s livelihoods and futures are at risk they will do things they normally wouldn’t do, things they know to be wrong. Principals like they have been cajoled will then put pressure on their teachers to ignore discipline and then nobody wins. Furthermore by ignoring discipline we make discipline worse; kids must have consequences for their behavior or their behavior will deteriorate and discipline despite what the district will have you believe hasn’t improved, what has is teachers and students ability to endure toxic environments. Step one of many should be to separate referrals and suspensions from principals evaluations.
But Chris is just a teacher and nobody listens to them.
