I see the JPEF has joined the superintendent and Times Union’s position that all is well in the district. Those darn lying eyes.
They wrote in a Times Union letter to the editor, Duval County Public Schools has raised graduation standards beyond state requirements.
Yes, Jacksonville has some of the highest standard in the states but in the process we have destroyed rigor in a lot of our classes. We don't need algebra II, we need a legitimate algebra I class.
They wrote, Enrollment in career and technical programs and the number of students passing AP, IB or AICE exams are all up 50 percent in the last four years.
Well that's because we throw kids who shouldn't be in those classes into those classes, we have the highest percentage of kids in AP classes and have the lowest passing rate in the state. Last year our AP pass rate was 25 percent with over 16,000 tests with a grade of 2 or 1.
They wrote more kids than ever are attending college. I don’t know how accurate that is but I’ll go with it. I wonder why they didn’t mention that more kids despite the higher graduation standards and more kids in AP classes are taking remedial classes.
I know there is a desire to celebrate achievement but our district is in trouble and when entities like the JPEF tell the public, hey look at all these great things it gives them the false impression that we are doing all right, when that is not the case.
We have pockets of greatness and a phenomenal base to work with but overall we are floundering.
