Even more tenth graders will pass the writing test this year than last year.

Friends if you want kids to do better on tests it turns out all you have to do is lower the score needed to pass. When the state board lowered the passing score on the FCAT writes from a 4 to a 3 the percentage of kids passing went up four fold. Now they did even better this year than last.

From Jill Johnson, DCPS’s director of communications

In an emergency session this morning, the State Board of Education passed a resolution to count as proficient any student who scored a 3.0 or higher on the 2012 Writing assessment. This is for this year only and the Florida Department of Education will work with an external agency (Buros) to examine what may have caused the drastic decline from last year in the percent of students scoring 4.0+.
This means the following:

2011 2012

Grade 4.0+ 3.0+
4- 81% 81%
8- 82% 77%
10- 80% 84%

Oh and why did we have the drastic decline? Well maybe it’s because after years of ignoring, grammar, punctuation and cogent thought we made those things necessary to do well.

Shouldn’t we all be proud?
