Board members Hazouri and Burney want to change the name of the teacher’s evaluation system. They say the CAST system sounds demeaning. Where I agree, since teachers have devolved from valued colleagues and peers to easily replaceable cogs and scapegoats it is somewhat appropriate but at the end of the day the name of the evaluation tool is not the problem, the evaluation tool is the problem.
Teachers are not against accountability or evaluations but is it too much to ask they have a tool that is fair, appropriate and administered by individuals that know what they are doing and are reasonable? A tool that helps not harms. Furthermore teachers should not be subjected to multivariable calculus what value added is based upon, to get their evaluations.
How about in addition to changing the name the board directs its admins to use it the way it was designed to be used?
