At Harvard University, he said it is a shame what we are doing to the children in our poorest neighborhoods and he is right but he should have stopped right there.
Is it a teacher or a schools fault that a neighborhood is mired in poverty? Newt implied as much when he said “…you’re totally poor in a school that is failing with a teacher that is failing.”
Schools don’t create poverty and teachers don’t create poverty either. Poverty in case you didn’t know it is the number one quantifiable measurement when determing how children do in school. Children that live in it as a group do a lot worse than children that don’t. Over a fifth of the nation’s children live in poverty and another fifth just above it.
Mr. Gingrich, it’s not our schools and teachers that our letting our neighborhoods down, it’s that we don’t invest in those schools, we don’t give them the resources they need and that people like you, who want to lead us don’t understand how poverty works.
