Before I get started I just want to say that I think education in Jacksonville is underfunded and that there are a lot of needs going unfulfilled. However I think there are ways to fund them without raising taxes; such as an end to unfunded mandates (or at least they should be paid for by the state government), gaining control of our budget, right now we basically have two budgets and they can’t mix regardless of priorities, and some cuts to the bloated administrative staff just to name a few options, would greatly help out.
Now to the rub.
The Times Union reported we are 25th in per capita school district property tax levies, well friends last year we were 50th (out of 67) in academic achievement. St. Johns on the other hand was eighth in spending and first in achievement. Hillsborough is bigger than us, spends less than us and does better than us academicaly as many counties do.
What are we doing wrong that they are doing right?
