The various groups in the committee charged with helping pick the next superintendent were asked to come up three challenges facing Duval County but were told not to consider poverty, you see every urban district has poverty.
In case you didn’t know it poverty is the number one quantifiable measurement when it comes to academic success. Those kids who live in poverty do not do as well as kids that don’t. You might not also know it but Duval County has plenty of poverty. A little over half our kids live in it or just out of it.
As a result when listing the challenges facing Duval County, the amount of kids who move multiple time in a year, the amount of homeless kids, the amount of kids living in single family households or with people who aren’t their parents or the amount of kids on free and reduced lunch, real challenges we have, much more important than just about any challenge they mentioned, weren’t.
I talked to Mrs. Bonner the moderator afterwards and we both agreed that poverty was a real challenge in the district and she said it would be addressed at future meetings. She seemed very sincere so I will take her at her word.
Poverty is a real issue we have and the next superintendent will have to put measures in place that help mitigate poverty and don’t worry friends just because Duval County doggedly resists solutions that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there.
I just hope the committee helps pick a superintendent who is interested in finally bringing these solutions to town
