From the Mouth of babes at the superintendent envisioning committee meeting
Last week I was very impressed with Lee student who said one of the biggest problems the district has is kids arriving to high school without the skills they need and then graduating the same way.
I thought, wow if she gets it, why don’t the adults in the room.
Well the students did it again tonight outclassing the adults with an understanding of the reality in our schools and what our kids need.
While discussing what our schools need the student table proposed we have multiple programs that serve more kids desires and abilities. They didn’t out right say we need to teach the trades, skills and arts but that was definitely their meaning. The teachers’ piggybacked on this a little but for the most part buzzwords and catch phrases dominated the suggestions from the other tables. If I hear diversity, global economy and empower one more time my head might spin off.
Friends not all our kids are going to go to college but that doesn’t mean we have to give up on them. On the contrary we need to provide for their needs too. We need to develop multiple curriculums that teach the trades, various skills and the arts so they to can have an opportunity to be successful citizens.
Lets worry about the global economy once we have given all our kids a chance to be successful and got our own house in order.
