Hugging in schools can get you suspended

From the St. Petersburg Times Gradebook

by Jeff Solocheck

A Brevard middle school eighth grader got an in-school suspension after his principal watched him hug a female student. Even the principal said the hug was innocent.

The boy's mom was "livid." But the rules are the rules, district officials tell Florida Today.

"Our business and focus is on learning, being protective of our students and being consistent with following our rules," district spokeswoman Christine Davis told the paper.

Hug bans, in fact, have taken effect at schools where hugging went over the top in hallways, sometimes even as a form of mockery and bullying. Many school districts including Hillsborough and Pasco have bans on "open displays of affection," but few have gone so far — publicly at least — as suspending kids for innocent hugs.

But should they? Is hugging a problem for schools
