It’s a rough draft they say but if the finished product is anywhere similar Duval County is in for more pain and disappointment.
"All students will fulfill their potential to learn to their highest level of intellectual, social and emotional ability and graduate with the ability to innovate and think critically. Duval County public school students will be empowered with the prerequisites to be successful in postsecondary education, reflect the best values of society and excel in an internationally competitive workforce."
First, all students? Um impossible and it reminds me of No Child left Behind which says all students will be proficient in Reading and Math by 2014. We need realistic and achievable goals.
Highest level of intellectual, social and emotional ability? I don’t even know what that means? Each individuals personal highest level? And what exactly are we doing to make sure each student reaches the highest level of intellectual, social and emotional ability. I will tell you that socially promoting kids without a work ethic and discipline isn’t helping with that flowery, nearly indecipherable, nonsensical goal.
Graduate with the ability to innovate and think critically? Is that what teaching to the test is supposed to create in our kids?
Empowered with the prerequisites to be successful in a postsecondary education? So now every kid regardless of desire and aptitude is going to go to college? Florida State College says seventy percent of our grads have to take remedial classes so we better get cracking on that one.
Reflect the best values of society? So we dropped work ethic and discipline from the best values list because many kids are graduating without either.
And finally, and excel in an internationally competitive workforce. You know that sounds nice but when employers here can’t find good candidates and business don’t want to move here because of our school system, we have bigger fish to fry. We should worry more about some of our kids being able to get local employment where there is room for advancement.
Friends see this is what our district does. Instead of coming up with solutions for our schools ills they sit around and write piles of crap.
Sheesh!
"THEIR potential"
ReplyDeleteIf you don't believe that all students can achieve their own highest potential, you shouldn't be teaching.
We need realistic goals and put stuctures in place to achieve them. Of course I would love for every kid to go to college and get a high paying job where they were challened and could use creativity but thats not going to happen and anybody who thinks it is has not been in one of the district's classrooms. We don't have the kids we wish we had, we have the kids we do and we should plan accordingly.
