This is in responce to a letter I wrote them. You can read it at my post, Dear School Board. -cpg
Hi Chris,
Thank you for your participation and comments.
Yes, we are aware of the employees' concerns which is why the Board made its decision to not renew the Superintendent's contract and to look for a transformational leader.
Florida statutes are clear-School Boards have only two employees-a Supt and an Auditor. The Board can hire and fire the Supt and the Board can direct the Supt to carry out specific Board mandates and policies.
The suggestions you made regarding discipline have already been said to the Superintendent in school board workshops and are on tape. The Board, in its governance role, is having a workshop on grade recovery and will give our direction to the Supt. Similarly, I asked for information on the C. A. S. T. System so that the Board can hold a workshop on it to give our directions and concerns to the Supt.
There is a process when you sit on the side of governance as opposed to sitting in the seat of management. Your Principal might see you as an ineffective teacher but he/she does not come in and teach your class everyday. The Principal has to follow the process to have you removed from the school and then there is a process to get you out of the system.
The Board, in its governance role has made the most effective decision that it could under the law. Now that the decision has been made the Board is doing everything it can to say 'o. K. We hear you. Now you can have a say in what the system should look like and based on your perspective you can share what type of leader you would like to see AND tell us the type of questions you would like us to ask the candidates.
By law a Board can only act as a body. By ourselves we have NO authority. At this juncture I am proud that the Board is acting as one to make a sweeping change in the District.
