Florida State College president Steve Wallace, wants to pull the wool over your eyes

Steve Wallace sings praises for the TPC as they bring together community and business leaders to discuss our education issues; you know who isn’t being brought in, Teachers, because they are always the last ones who are asked. No other field consistently ignores the people who are charged with carrying out the job, than education does.

You would expect the President of Florida College of Jacksonville to know better but like the Jacksonville Public Education Fund did in an earlier letter it seems like he is more concerned with pulling the wool over the cities eyes than dealing with the education issues facing the city.

Let’s start with his graduation claim that our rate has improved 12 percent over the last five years. On its face it is correct but what he doesn’t mention is it has only climbed 6 percent over the last six years. When the district increased its standards the grad rate fell fast and hard. He also doesn’t mention how grade recovery a perverted mechanism that has destroyed student accountability has distorted our grad rates but hey why let pesky facts get in the way of his point.

He then lauds the KIPP School the worst performing school in Northeast Florida and Teach for America, the organization that brings in hobbyists looking for an adventure to teach in our struggling schools. I guess he doesn’t care that of the first 91 only 14 remain. More pesky facts he seeks to ignore. Oh and Mr. Wallace a lot of people don't think those are good things.

I wonder why he didn’t mention that 70% of our grads have to take remedial classes at his college.

I could go on but I am starting to feel ill just thinking about it.

Mr. Wallace you get a fail.
