Do you ever sometimes wonder who the school board works for and then came to the conclusion it isn't us? First, we are rushing to open schools during a pandemic basically because the mayor and governor want us too not because it is good policy and then today the board is set to approve 4 unnecessary charter schools because, reasons.
Three are River City Science schools expanding into neighborhoods that already have great schools. Now you might be saying they are science schools, well friends from what I understand, the science is just in the name.
Four DCPS schools underutilized and doing as well as the chain looking to move in. This is what I am talking about, charter schools must be necessary and work with the district, as far as I can tell none of these do so. Also, I can't help but think because of the referendum, the owner of River City sees dollar signs floating around their heads.
Hey just what some of the best schools in the city need an unecassary school to drain resources away from them? So much for the argument charters were to save poor children from their failing public schools.
Now you might be saying, well it looks like the charter is doing marginally better than the public schools here. First, there is selection bias but even more insidious is charters pick and choose who they take and keep.
And of course KIPP rears its head. It must have sniffed money.
Then there is KIPP, first wow, KIPP is dipping its toe into high schools? Up till now, they had never done anything above middle. Then River City as disgusted by above as I am, at least they have never had a local school fail where KIPP has had two.
Like all charters, they pick who they take and keep, but unlike any other school, they get about a third more funding per pupil. I submit if any public school had that advantage they would run circles around KIPP.
Before you think I am anti-charter, I am not. If they are innovative, non-profit, and work with the district to fill needs, then I say, sign us up. Unfortunately none of above check all those boxes..
So you ever wonder who the school board works for? Just watch tonight and it will become obvious.
