As you can tell by the title diversity was a huge theme at tonight’s superintendent envision committee meeting and no I am not a member I just sat in the back and watched (I wasn’t even allowed to ask questions). Group after group talked about the need for understanding diversity and I found this very ironic considering the set up of the meeting.
Teachers sat with teachers, parents with parents, principals with principals, students with students and then there were three tables of politicians, special interests, community organizations and business leaders who sat with politicians, special interests, community organizations and business leaders.
Talk about diversity.
Let me break the numbers down for you.
There was three students representing 123,000 students.
There was seven parents representing nearly a quarter million parents.
There was three teachers representing nearly 7000 teachers.
There was seven principals representing 180 principals.
Then there was 21 politicians, special interests members, agents of community organizations and business leaders representing, well, it is sometimes hard to tell whom they are representing.
Thirteen for the vast majority of the city and 21 for, well reread above again.
Talk about diversity.
