From Scathing Purple Musings
by Bob Sykes
In stark opposition to parent public school advocacy groups across the state, Jeb Bush’s education foundation announced its support for controversial parent trigger legislation. The Orlando Sentinel is reporting Bush’s support for SB 718/HB 1199, and like his legislative allies, is using the terribly misleading Parent Empowerment Act to describe the legislation.
Ironic the bill would be referred to as empowering parents when so many parent groups oppose it. Yet Bush’s foundation says it will “enable parents to choose the intervention model to transform their child’s persistently failing school.” The parent coalition released this last week:
The “Parent Trigger” is a common ploy that has been attempted around the country. This legislation cynically uses parents and their love for their children as a tool to pull the “trigger” and hand their neighborhood school over to a private entity with no true guarantee of gaining anything better for the children. The net result is that schools are taken away from the jurisdiction of duly elected district officials and the physical property of the school is seized and handed over to a for-profit management company
Six republican legislators have financial interests in for-profit charters. The nation’s largest for-profit charter school corporation, Charter USA is one of Bush’s financial backers.
