The Times Union once again buries their head in the sand

Today’s education editorial was about Douglass Anderson and how they won the Grammy for having the top music department in the nation. That’s right folks the whole good old U.S. of A. The Times Union was right to acknowledge them. It’s a big deal and if they would have stopped right there it would have been fine but for some reason the editor, I believe more in an effort to convince themselves had to throw in: this shows that we don't have to look far to find some of the best public education in the nation.

Let’s not forget for one second that this is a dedicated magnet school that takes just the best of the best. Let’s also not forget for one second that issues with discipline an effort are uncommon there and then let’s not forget for one second that the kids there are learning about and doing the things they want to do which is not nearly as common at our neighborhood schools. So yes, great job Douglass Anderson, the whole city is proud of you but our pride for what you have accomplished should not excuse the mess that the district has made of our neighborhood schools, though it sounds like the Times Union is more than willing too.

I wonder where the editorial about how we have eight of the bottom 25 high schools in Florida including number 404 out of 404 is. I wonder where the editorial about how only one of our neighborhood high schools was ranked in the top 183, Mandarin at number 85. There is a school that the TU should do an editorial about. I wonder where the editorial about the Superintendent and districts woeful lack of ideas to improve the fate of our neighborhood schools is.

You won’t find them because to the Times Union because one dedicated, elite magnet school gets a national accolade it dismisses all the rest of the districts issues.

I will tip my hat to D.A. but I will refuse to forget what a mess this school board and superintendent have made of our district.
