Yesterday on Kent Justice’s show, Jerry Holland announced that Betty Burney would not be running because of term limits. Today he backed away from the statement saying in the Times Union: “I had a conversation with her a while back when this first came up, and she talked about the case may give her reason not to run and based on that I drew the conclusion that she would not be running,” he said. “I will call her just to make sure to clarify that anything I said I will retract and that everyone knows she is still running if she wants to.”
Mrs. Burney hasn’t been acting like she has been running. She didn’t collect petitions, complete the master board course and she blew off the DTU’s questionnaire. Furthermore the term limit issue is looming. If she decides to get on the ballot there will also undoubtedly be a legal challenge.
Mrs. Burney has had her eight years, eight of arguably the worse years since desegregation. I don’t question her commitment to children, just her results which have been terrible. It is time the city moved in a different direction, a direction that includes respect for teachers and a return to student accountability.
