Paxon once one of the crown jewels of the county has fallen on, relatively speaking, hard times, since new Principal Royce Turner took over. His first year there they were ranked by Newsweek as the 8th best school in the nation, his second 170.
Their ninth grade reading scores have held steady but their 10th grade reading scores have dropped 13 percent and the math scores five percent respectively from the year before he arrived to last year.
The science FCAT the year before Turner arrived had 87% of the students at or above grade level and last year that had dropped to 78%.
Turner’s FCAT numbers at Ribault, the school he was principal before Paxon showed similar results. Ribault has gone from an F school to a C school since he left.
Since Turner arrived dozens of teachers have left. Now it’s not unusual for schools to have turnover but what is unusual is how so many left during the school year. The last count was ten this year alone.
I believe his name is Royce Turner.
