The superintendent shouldn’t be scoffing at anything.

The superintendent recently celebrated gains that many of our schools made. He didn’t mention once how a change in scoring led to many of them. He is now critical of changes the state is about to make saying hey will cause our schools to slide. Well sir, are you going to have your cake or eat it?

Now the superintendent is correct about the provision that forces disabled students into regular education classes. It is really a travesty that we will have severely disabled children in classes’ way above their heads, which they have no real hope in passing. It is a disservice to them and the regular education kids that they will be in class with as well.

Unfortunately the plight of the disabled child in Duval County has long been troublesome. Instead of giving them training so they may one day find a job we put them in watered down academic classes that prepare them for nothing.

Both the state and the district should look for a solution that serves their needs rather than trying to force them all into a one size fits all box.
