Chris Guerrieri calls out the Times Union over graduation rates

Once again the Times Union talks about the improvement of the county’s graduation rate which means unfortunately they think if they tell the big lie long enough people will believe it.

The Times Union is enamored with graduation rates and thinks this board should be proud of its improvement. The reality is a little different.
The graduation rate has gone up by about six percent (most of that in the last two years) since the district went to higher standards six years ago. This is undoubtedly greatly influenced by social promotions and the districts judicious use of grade recovery.

This has led to the destruction of student accountability and ensures many students will graduate ill prepared for what comes next.

The Times Union does the city a disservice when it puts a positive spin on the serious problems our schools are facing.

All I ask is we have an honest conversation about education.
