Governor signs voucher and prayer bills

From the Orlando Sentinel, by leslie Postal

Gov. Rick Scott today signed a bill that allows “inspirational messages” — including prayers — at school assemblies. The controversial bill prompted a good amount of emails both in opposition and support of the measure, colleague Kathleen Haughney reports.

He has also signed a bill that expands the state’s Tax Credit Scholarship program, which provides tuition vouchers to private schools to students from low-income families. The bill will allow the program, which has a long waiting list, to serve more interested youngsters.

The program now serves about 38,000 students has about 13,000 on its waiting list. The new law allows corporations, which fund the program, to donate more money to it, and it also removes an eligibility requirement that had meant the program was open only to students who were in public school the prior year.
