In today’s editorial the unnamed editor mentioned the Times Union’s city of Hope. They touted how they had paired with major community partners. Did you notice who they didn’t pair with? Teachers that is who.
Education is the one field where those people who do it are always the last asked how to improve it or what they think should happen. Teachers are given all of the responsibility and none of the authority. They are dictated to by bureaucrats and “major community partners” and newspaper editors who have never been in a classroom. We don’t treat the police, doctors, firemen, soldiers or any other occupation this way.
Education will never improve to the level it should until we start treating teachers like valued colleagues instead of easily replaceable cogs. If the powers-that-be collaborated with teachers instead of told them what to do and then blamed them for the failures then education would be in a much better place.
