In an article about the search for a new superintendent Burney said she isn’t worried about the competition. “I know a lot of them are looking but … one of the first things we offer is that we are a board trained in reform and we want the board to understand its governance role, and I think that is a message that any superintendent wants to know and that will be a difference.”
What?!? If you are not as befuddled as I am please drop me a note explaining what she just said.
Lets talk about reforms here in Duval County. Yes it is true that we have some of the highest standards in the state and have had them for quite some time but they also led to a cookie cutter curriculum that every kid regardless of ability and aptitude is forced into, the districts unofficial “Gentlemens C” policy and grade recovery which has destroyed student accountability.
As for our other big reform, the magnet programs, people are split. It’s true we have some top notch dedicated magnet schools but has the wreckage created by the brain drain at our neighbor schools been worth it?
As I see it maybe we have had to much reform.
Once again Mrs. Burney is speaking in some flowery rhetoric that makes no sense at all. I however will break it down for you and I will do so without using the word transformational.
We need a leader who is going to insist on rigorous classes, discipline schools and is going to treat and insist his subordinates do, teachers like valuable assets not like easily replaceable cogs.
