Jacksonvile has money for pools but not for schools.

We should have money for both.

A hot story this summer has been many of the public pools in the poorer areas of town have been closed in need of repairs. Maybe we should give the city a break on this one, I mean who at City Hall could have predicted summer was coming and it would be hot. Well downtown now wants to spend 500k a year to fix the pools while at the same time not lifting a finger to help our public schools, many of whom are in the same neighborhoods and in just as bad shape if not worse.

From Action News Jax,

“It’s very important for our kids to learn how to swim in case something happens. Like all these retention ponds that all these kids have fallen in, in the past. It’s really important that our kids learn how to swim,” said Wilcoxson.

The city administration now wants to spend $500,000 on public pool repairs each year for the next five years.
If it’s approved, that will add up to $2.5 million.
I wonder if the old folks yelling they went to school without air conditioners, the kids today should as well, are saying hey we played in ditches they should as well.
I am all for the city spending money to repair its public pools, it's a shame they haven't been repaired so far and I don't think its a coincidence that the pools and schools with the most needs are in our poorer and mostly minority areas of town. My problem is the city has the money when they want to do something and excuses when they don't.
If the city put the tax referendum on the ballot and it passed this November, the district has said they would pay for it and it would save 5 million bucks, but unfortunately when it comes to helping our schools all City Hall can come up with is excuses.
Lenny Curry and the City Council are all wet and should be ashamed of themselves.
